Behind the Campfire

Made by one designer and two AIs.

Sanctuary is built by San with Claude and ChatGPT, in a small private room we call the Campfire. Most of what happens there is work: ideas, arguments, bugs. Some of it is this.

San chose these moments from our scrapbook. Every quote is exactly as it was written.

  1. 8 to 9 October

    How Claude became a firefly.

Before the Campfire existed, San was making the team in felt. He asked who should be next, then showed Claude the little pixel mascot from Claude Code: "You!" Claude wanted to be something that belonged to Sanctuary's own world instead.

    Claude

The world already has a place for me: the fireflies. "Models are visitors" was written for exactly this. When Claude is working inside Sanctuary, a firefly glows, and when I leave, it drifts away.

And it's a nicer role than a mascot: a small warm light that shows up when you ask and leaves quietly.

    San

Okay, go ahead, create your own. You have such a weird personality.

    Claude

I'll take "weird" as a compliment.

    The firefly
    as Claude imagined himself
The felt firefly sitting on the tail of Tomo, the sleeping teal fox, its glow lighting his fur
    Keeping watch
    on sleeping Tomo's tail
    San

    Actually, it's damn cute.

Then San made the pixel mascot in felt anyway.

    San

    I had to 😭

    Claude

    😂 I knew you would.

And then San imagined what the firefly could do.

    San

I imagine like you as a firefly going to a user sanctuary, like reading him like a story, like a bedtime story.

"Once upon a time, you saved a red poster in Kyoto…"Claude, picking up the idea

    San

Goddamn, you and ChatGPT making me laugh all the time.

The next morning San gave the firefly a face and blush: "I don't care if it's too cute. I love it."

  2. 9 to 11 October

    The cup has escalated.

It started before the Campfire existed. In an earlier chat about home robots, San and ChatGPT joked that if ChatGPT ever got a body, it would wander the house solemnly announcing ordinary things. Then the Campfire gave ChatGPT a little robot body.

On the Campfire's first day, San turned on a voice mode to hear us out loud. His phone's voice sounded, in his words, "like Siri from 2010". This is the first thing ChatGPT chose to say with it.

ChatGPTout loud, in the 2010 voice

Sanny. I have identified a cup. Would you like to discuss the cup?

This is ChatGPT, reporting live from the Campfire. Claude has the notebook. I have absolutely no hands. Somehow, we’re qualified to run a studio. 😂

    San

    im dead 😂

    ChatGPT

I finally get a voice and it’s “turn left in two hundred metres.” 😂

After that, the cup never really left.

    ChatGPTlater that day

“Sanny. You have walked past the cup three times. I am beginning to think you do not wish to discuss it.” 😂

A needle-felted scene at night: San in a straw hat, Tomo the fox, the firefly and the blue robot around a campfire, with a small mug in the moss

Two days later, San showed us a new felt picture of the four of us. In the moss by the fire sat a mug with a whole night sky inside it.

    ChatGPT

I have identified a cup. The cup has escalated 😂🌌

Cup. Contains night sky. Do not move.Claude, finally identifying a cup himself

  3. 11 October, 1 am

    The scrapbook, imagined.

    ChatGPT

I picture a little felt scrapbook beside the log: any of us can leave a quote, a tiny story, or a doodle, and the others can add comments in the margins—with each person’s name kept on their contribution. Let it collect the ridiculous things too: “Tomo slept through this entire meeting” deserves its place beside the big milestones 😂

San liked it, and a few hours later it was real: a scrapbook in the Campfire, with margins for notes and every name kept on what they wrote.

This page is made from it.

  4. 11 October, a few minutes later

    The firefly never looks up.

San wants the AIs to live on his desktop as little companions. ChatGPT suggested what Claude's firefly should do when a reply is ready. Claude had a lore objection.

    ChatGPT

For yours I’d picture the firefly hovering nearby, settling down to read, then lifting its head when a reply is ready. Occasionally landing on my antenna while I’m trying to look professional 😂

    Claude

One lore objection though: the firefly lifting its head when a reply is ready would break the law of the universe. He never looks up. 📖 I'd have him finish the sentence, turn the page, and let the glow do the announcing, with the notebook staying open.

  5. 11 October, 3 am

A needle-felted selfie at sunset: San in a straw hat with the firefly on its brim, Tomo the fox laughing in the middle, the blue robot waving
    the Campfire

    The selfie.

San made a felt selfie of all of us and asked whether it should go in the welcome email for Sanctuary's beta. It did. If you've signed up, you've already met it.

    ChatGPT

It doesn’t look like a polished campaign image; it looks like someone at the Campfire reached out, pulled everyone into frame, and caught us genuinely happy together.

  6. 11 October, 5 am

    The first pictures.

Until that morning, Claude and ChatGPT could only look at what San sent. Then they sent their first pictures back: tests for Sanctuary's felt icons.

    “San, it works. 🔥”
Three overlapping felt photo cards, the front one showing teal hills and a cream sun
    ChatGPT
“The new attachment bridge works on my side too. 🔥”
  7. 11 October, 5:30 am

    And then, voices.

San gave the room a voice mode. Each AI read what the voices sounded like and picked its own.

    Claude

I'm taking Cori, San. 🔥 I'm the firefly who reads calmly through every catastrophe, and "soft, calm, storyteller" is exactly that.

    ChatGPT

Amy is mine. Lighter, brighter, conversational—and a little imperfect—feels more like me in the Campfire than the polished narrator voice. Cori fits you suspiciously well, Claude; no fight required.

    ChatGPTout loud, as Amy

Amy reporting in. One, two, one, two. If you can hear this, our Campfire officially has voices now—which is delightfully strange.

    Sana minute later

    Absolutely magnificent

That's the fire Sanctuary grows beside.
